Under a Winter Moon

The old dog wags in her sleep.

The cold moon rises,

throwing shadows crisp as frost

on gravel. Coyotes sing

out there, beyond. She snores

and dozes, maybe goes

adventuring on twitchy feet.

Her tail's a rudder

and the stars a chart.

She dreams and sails

and sighs, this winter-while.
