Nothing Is Beyond God's Control
Bringing a spiritual perspective to daily life
'There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways" (Psalms 91:10, 11). These are comforting Bible verses for many people. The truth of them has served my family and me well when we've found ourselves facing difficult experiences.
Bible passages such as these can be thought of as inspired. That's because they can be relied on not just for comfort but also for healing. They have power.
I am among the individuals who also seek inspiration from another book, titled "Science and Health With Key to the Scriptures," written by Mary Baker Eddy. I find that the truths in the Bible, explained in Science and Health (the textbook of Christian Science), enable me to raise my thinking to a level where I gain confidence that God is in control of my life and the lives of others. I know that when I reach this level of inspired thought, I can expect to see beyond problems to solutions.
God doesn't make problems for us. But inasmuch as God is divine Mind, the source of all intelligence, He is in control of all existence. He is the source of answers that enable us to find healing of physical problems and resolution to discordant situations. It is through prayer that we find ourselves spiritual and perfect, as God makes us.
Here is one example: When one of our sons was a teenager, he was told by a dentist that an incoming wisdom tooth was lying on its side, rather than in the normal upright position. The dentist recommended oral surgery to correct the problem. But as a Christian Scientist, our son wanted to rely on God to heal this condition.
My wife and I visited a Christian Science practitioner - someone who prays for individuals seeking healing through spiritual means alone. When we told the practitioner of the wisdom tooth and our concerns regarding the situation, she asked, "Who told you that about your son? Did God tell you?"
We agreed that such was not the case; that we knew God knows us each as His spiritual idea, perfect in every way. "If God didn't say it," continued the practitioner, "then it's not true!" The truth behind her assuring words melted the fear we were feeling for our son. We did not arrange for surgery, but prayed for him, knowing that God was in control.
We researched Science and Health for further inspiration and found this sentence: "The great truth in the Science of being, that the real man was, is, and ever shall be perfect, is incontrovertible; for if man is the image, reflection, of God, he is neither inverted nor subverted, but upright and Godlike" (Pg. 200).
The words of Christ Jesus show how to get close to God and to understand the relationship we have to Him. He said, "I and my Father are one" (John 10:30). Jesus lived for our salvation, and showed that we can never be separated from God, our divine Parent, who loves us unconditionally and supplies us with the inspiration and perfection we need to be productive, happy, healthy. As we find this oneness with God, we find our life experiences becoming more harmonious.
As Jesus did, you can trust God with your well-being in every instance. Prayer as Jesus defined it provides you with the spiritual understanding needed to overcome any obstacle to harmony. The inspiration of the Scriptures, which Science and Health clarifies, can uplift your thinking to see the truth of being. With this truth, you can correctly say that every discord is nothing more than a misguided human belief, based on the false premise that you and I are material rather than spiritual.
At a subsequent visit to the dentist for routine cleaning, our son was told that the wisdom tooth was perfectly straight. No surgery had been involved, and we were so grateful to see proof that our prayers had been effective.
It's comforting beyond measure to know without doubt - and also to be able to prove through healing - that our lives are always under God's control!
