Campaign reformer 'Granny D'

Granny D still walks 10 miles a day, six days a week, in her quest to reform the nation's campaign-finance laws. We caught up with her by cell phone last week in Jackson, Tenn. (She should be in Nashville by now.)

The good news, says Granny D (Doris Haddock), is that the United States House of Representatives passed a campaign-finance reform bill since the June 30 Monitor story.

"We'd like to ask all your readers to call their senators, because next month they're going to be taking up the McCain-Feingold bill," says Granny D. If the Senate bill passes, her cross-country quest will be over.

"I'd be happy to go home," to Dublin, N.H., she says. She began walking on Jan. 1 in California. "But I've adopted this way of life," and now she likes it.

Does she think all her walking affected the political process? "I hope I'm making an impression," she says.
