'Global citizen' Garry Davis
On May 25, 1948, Garry Davis walked into the United States Embassy in Paris and renounced his US citizenship. The former Broadway actor and World War II bomber pilot declared himself the first "citizen of the world."
War persists because nations persist, Mr. Davis said, and the only way to world peace was world government.
Davis probably would have found many kindred spirits in the late 1960s, but at the time it earned him international notoriety.
"I was known in France as 'the white wolf,' " he said by phone from his office in Burlington, Vt. "I couldn't walk down the street without being mobbed" by angry citizens.
With no passport, Davis was forced out of France. He returned to America as an "immigrant," he says, and declared the World Government of World Citizens in 1953.
He still pursues his dream. He lectures across the country and has written four books. He ran for the US presidency in 1987 and is now campaigning for world presidency.
