Buckle up Rover in the car

When driving during the holidays, or anytime, make sure that dogs and cats making the trip with you don't distract the driver.

Janet Carnes of the Transportation Safety Training Center of Virginia Commonwealth University says that dogs, like children, should ride in the back seat and be properly restrained.

She recommends transporting small animals in a carrier that's fastened securely to a seat belt.

For larger dogs, check pet supply stores for a harness that's designed to work with a safety belt.
