Final plans for Y2K

Institutions of all stripes continue to prepare for that much-reported event (or nonevent) 12 days from now: Y2K.

Bank officials, for example, say they are "99.9 percent" prepared for any Y2K computer glitches. Analysts have urged senior citizens, in particular, not to withdraw large sums of money in anticipation of problems.

Companies, too, are taking extra steps to stay ready, reports Edwin Perlin Associates, a New York consulting firm. Some companies plan simply to shut down their computer systems Dec. 31. Others plan to put their computer technical staffs on call for New Year's Eve, or postpone staff vacations scheduled around Jan. 1 - and extend a platter of perks as compensation.
