Surfers ride the Web at work

Is your office glued to the Web? Vault.com, a leading workplace Web site, polled more than 2,500 employees and employers and found:

*37% of employees "constantly" surf the Web.

About these ads

*90% surf nonwork-related sites at least once a day.

*84% send personal e-mails at least once a day.

How the bosses feel:

*82% tolerate a "reasonable" amount of Web surfing.

*86% tolerate at least some personal e-mail.

*31% monitor or restrict Internet and e-mail usage.

But the big debate remains: Does the Web increase or decrease productivity? Ultimately, such factors as personal work ethic make the difference.

About these ads

"Learning about what's on the Web makes me aware of 'nontraditional' resources when I'm looking for creative solutions to problems," said one polled worker.
