Calcutta: 93 degrees F., and more rain to come

Some streets still looked like rivers yesterday - a 54-inch soaker May 18 was the city's heaviest May rain since 1949. The water was a relief after droughts across South Asia, and monsoon season begins in earnest soon. Yet the Worldwatch Institute estimates that 3 billion people around the globe will experience chronic water shortages by 2025 due to waste and environmental degradation.
