A cornucopia of Copland

It's still not too late to attend some of the Copland events scheduled this year. Among those yet to come:

The "Aaron Copland's America" exhibit at the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, N.Y., through Jan. 21.

In November and December, orchestras in Atlanta; Boston; Fort Worth, Texas; Vienna; and Frankfurt, among others, will pay homage with special concerts.

The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., hosts a Copland symposium Nov. 14-18, featuring works commissioned for the occasion by composers such as David Diamond and Lukas Foss.

In January, the Utah Symphony conducted by Keith Lockhart will launch a three-week Copland festival.

Record companies continue to offer centenary issues, including a 2-CD set from the St. Louis Symphony on BMG records. Sony will release an extensive set of recordings of Copland's work conducted by the composer himself.

PBS will air a show about Copland Jan. 21, with music performed by Jonathan Sheffer's Eos Ensemble, which also has a CD of the composer's music in the works with Sony. Sheffer calls Copland's music "deceptively simple Americana which speaks to all of us."

National Public Radio features "Copland Week" Nov. 11-18, including five one-hour tribute concerts.

The Da Camera of Houston will perform at The Menil Collection Nov. 14, the composer's birthday, in a special "party" program featuring the baritone William Sharp.
