You can see the smile

The shores of Lake Malawi in southern Africa are teeming with activity. I was there recently with writer Danna Harman, working on a series that will appear soon in the Monitor. I had been taking pictures of fishermen working on their nets and women drying fish in the fading afternoon sun. Children roamed the sandy shore, helping when needed but mostly playing. There is no best way to capture playfulness, photographically. Sometimes I want to show faces full of joy or mischief; other times, I believe that characteristic is best left to our mind's eye.

This girl and her friends were doing their best to impress me with their headstanding ability. We laughed together as they tried, failed, and ultimately succeeded. I thought it best to let the feet tell the story. I look at the feet, and I see a smile.
