The White House said President Bush shrugged off a call for Defense Secretary Rumsfeld's resignation published Monday by an independent military publication, according to CNN. The editorial, printed in the Army Times and three other branch service publications owned by the Gannett newspaper chain, was prompted by Bush's statement that he wanted Rumsfeld to stay on through the president's second term, CNN said. "Rumsfeld has lost credibility with the uniformed leadership, with the troops, with Congress, and the public at large," the editorial contends.

The Overseer Board of the 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs, Colo., dismissed its politically active pastor, the Rev. Ted Haggard, Saturday for "sexually immoral conduct." Haggard had resigned two days earlier as president of the National Association of Evangelicals after a Denver man claimed he'd had sexual relations with him. Haggard has admitted to some of the accusations against him.

More than half of commercial runways at US airports don't include a 1,000-foot overrun area needed for safety purposes, according to data released late last week by the government. The Federal Aviation Administration said ongoing efforts to upgrade these runways should be complete by 2015.

Former oceanographer-turned- Episcopal Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori was officially installed Saturday as the first woman to lead her church and the first female priest to head an Anglican national church worldwide. Her nine-year term began with a cer-emony at Washington National Cathedral. She supports ordaining gays, a position that has angered many traditionalists and overseas Anglicans.
