President Bush plans to vote in Crawford, Texas, Tuesday after spending the final hours before the midterm elections campaigning for Republican gubernatorial candidates in Florida (Charlie Crist), Arkansas (Asa Hutchinson), and Texas (incumbent Rick Perry). Bush will return to Washington to await returns from numerous close races, the White House said.

A letter of apology from the Rev. Ted Haggard, who was dismissed by his Colorado Springs, Colo., New Life Church, was read Sunday to a standing-room-only crowd of 8,000 parishioners. In it, Haggard, the deposed president of the National Association of Evangelicals, acknowledged that "enough" accusations of "sexual immorality" against him were true to support his firing.

The search continued Monday in Reno, Nev., of the charred rubble of the Mizpah Hotel after two more victims were found Sunday, raising the death toll for a Halloween night fire to 11. The 84-year-old building is a Reno landmark. Police have arrested a woman suspected of starting the blaze by igniting a mattress.

About 10,000 people, including Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D), and other state officials attended a memorial service Sunday for five California firefighters killed Oct. 26 by a wind-driven blaze set by an arsonist 100 miles east of Los Angeles. Raymond Lee Oyler, a suspect in the case was arrested last week.

The Supreme Court Monday turned down California's request to reinstate the death sentence against Willam Clark of Los Angeles, who took revenge on his therapist in 1982 by murdering her husband. An appeals court overturned the death sentence because the jury may have received improper instructions.

Marilson Gomes dos Santos of Brazil broke away from the field over the last quarter of the New York City Marathon Sunday to become its first winner from South America. He also snapped a decade-long domination by African runners. Latvia's Jelena Prokopcuka defended her title in the women's division. American cyclist Lance Armstrong, a seven-time winner of the Tour de France, completed his first marathon in 2:59:36, barely achieving his goal of breaking three hours.
