4. The 3,000 English villagers evicted so Americans could practice for D-Day

US forces, wanting to be as prepared as possible for the invasion of Normandy during World War II, saw the area of Slapton Sands in southern England as an almost perfect substitute for the French shore they code-named "Utah Beach." The Americans evicted the 3,000 people living in the villages of Slapton and Torcross, without an explanation, so they could rehearse.
