Suite Française

I just finished reading Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky which exposed the destructiveness of class distinctions the French imposed on themselves during the German occupation of France in WWII.  The French were sometimes their own worst enemy, much crueler towards their countrymen in trying times than their so-called German enemy ever was.  Even though the book is fiction, it feels real. Némirovsky was a Jew and died at Auschwitz.  Her book was saved and translated more than 40 years later.  And while many in her suite of characters are consumed with their own selfish and sometimes ridiculous concerns, some shine through with their love for others.
