It only has one reactor, but it provides almost 40 percent of Armenia’s electric power. It’s one of two reactors built more than three decades ago using Soviet technology. But after a large 1988 earthquake in its northwestern region, the government shut down both reactors. In 1995, amid a deep recession, one reactor was restarted and has been operating every since.
