Indiana Republican Rep. Mark Souder is apologizing for an affair with a staffer and say he'll resign from Congress effective Friday.

Souder said during a news conference Tuesday in Fort Wayne that he was "sorry to have let so many friends down."

He says that he has "sinned against God, my wife and my family by having a mutual relationship with a part-time member of my staff."

Souder won a bruising Republican primary on May 4 to be nominated for his ninth term representing northeastern Indiana.

The 59-year-old has been married to his wife, Diane, since 1974, and they have three adult children.
