Gold's journey

Image 6 of 19

This photo taken on Feb. 23, 2009 shows mining workers standing on a muddy cliff as they work at a gold mine in Chudja, near Bunia, in northeastern Congo. Eighteen prospectors were killed overnight on August 19-20, 2008 in a diamond mine in central Democratic Republic of Congo, union officials said. Celestin Kubela, the head of the local mining authority in Kasai province, said that the victims, who were all illlegal miners, are thought to have touched a power cable deep underground.
