Search for volunteer opportunities on Serve.gov

NEWSCOM
First Lady Michelle Obama and First Lady of California Maria Shriver promote community volunteerism at the Bret Harte Elementary School in San Francisco, Calif.

On September 11, President Obama encouraged citizens to volunteer their time and efforts to commemorate the first official September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance.

But volunteering doesn't have to stop at just one day.

One way people find volunteer opportunities is through a new website, Serve.gov, which aims to match up volunteers and nonprofit organizations. The website, launched in June by the Corporation for National and Community Service, lists around 250,000 volunteer opportunities, which are searchable by one's interest and location.

In June, First Lady Michelle Obama helped kick off a national campaign to increase volunteerism in America as a part of President Obama's United We Serve Initiative, an effort to boost the ranks of volunteers between June 22 to September 11. Though September 11 has passed, the serve.gov website offers year-round volunteer opportunities nationwide.

On Thursday, the Corporation for National and Community Service launched a Spanish version of the website. Tonight, First Lady Michelle Obama will promote the website in a video, which will be shown during the 2009 NCLR ALMA Awards on ABC, according to a Corporation for National and Community Service press release.
