Droid X phones are reportedly sold out at dozens of Verizon Wireless outlets around the country today. At left, Katie Masucci, a college student, is shown purchasing one of the first Droid X handsets at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store in Frisco, Texas.

Droid X is here! And Droid X is also sold out. That's the news from PC World, which reports today that Droid X stock has vanished from the Verizon Wireless online store – and from hundreds of Verizon retail outlets around the country. According to several top tech blogs, Verizon won't replenish its Droid X line until July 23, so Droid fanatics could find themselves without a brand new handset for another week.

As we noted recently, Sprint has announced that it sold more than 300,000 HTC EVO 4G handsets, outpacing the production capabilities of HTC, the Taiwanese company which produces the EVO 4G. Verizon Wireless has experienced similar problems with the Droid Incredible, but the company assured consumers this week that shortages wouldn't hinder the Droid X launch.

"While we are currently experiencing delays on orders of one of our more popular phones. We view that as an anomaly driven by a combination of supply and popularity," Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney told CNET. "At present, we feel that we have done everything possible to ensure we have inventory to meet customer needs around the Droid X – the proof will be in the execution on July 15."

Oops.

By most accounts, the Droid X – which ships with a 8-megapixel camera and the Android 2.1 operating system – is a doozy of a smartphone. Reviewers particularly love 4.3-inch high-resolution display on the Droid X. Those dimensions "may not sound huge, but for a cell phone this is fairly enormous," the AP's Rachel Metz wrote recently. Moreover, "the Droid X's screen isn't just large; it's also brilliant and crisp."

And the Droid X certainly has impeccable timing: The phone arrives just as Apple finds itself struggling to reassure consumers that the iPhone 4 is still top of the smartphone heap.
