What is the Droid Pro?

Droid Pro rumors have rippled across the Web in recent days. But the Droid Pro is not – as some have predicted – a successor to the Droid X.

Droid Pro will look an awful lot like the Droid 2, pictured here. That's because the Droid Pro is basically the Droid 2 – trussed up with one important added functionality.

The rumors have been skittering around the Web since Monday: Verizon Wireless is set to release yet another Droid phone, this one called – with something less than flourish – the Droid Pro.

Yesterday, the folks at Engadget confirmed that the Droid Pro exists. But if you were hoping for some drastically rejiggered version of the Droid X, you're out of luck.

According to Engadget, the Droid Pro is essentially a global version of the Droid 2, kitted out with both GSM and CDMA radios, so the phone can be used overseas. Citing a "source close to the situation," Engadget's Chris Ziegler writes that the Droid Pro will be "identical to the current Droid 2 in every way except for the fact that it houses a GSM / HSPA radio for global roaming."

Earlier this month, of course, Verizon Wireless released the Droid 2, an updated version of the original Droid phone. Compared to the Droid X – which was also launched this summer – the Droid 2 is a svelte, slimmed-down machine. It features a 3.7-inch display, a slide-out keyboard, the Android 2.2 Froyo OS, Adobe Flash 10.1, and the Motoblur interface.

Reviews of the Droid 2 have been mixed. Some bloggers praised the Motoblur software and the sleek design of the Droid 2. Others complained that the phone failed to really improve on the original Droid. Chris Ziegler of Engadget, for instance, reported voice "signal strength was a major issue for all four Engadget editors who've been able to spend time with four different Droid 2s in different parts of the country this week."
