The Lifetime drama “Witches of East End” returned for a second season on July 6.
“Witches” is based on the series of the same name by author Melissa de la Cruz, the first book in which was first published in 2011. The novel follows the Beauchamp family, mother Joanna and sisters Freya and Ingrid, who are gifted with magical powers.
The author has also released two other novels in the series, “Serpent’s Kiss,” which was released in 2012, and “Winds of Salem,” which was published last summer, as well as a prequel titled “Diary of the White Witch.” The writer is also behind such series as the young adult “Blue Bloods” books, among other titles. “Blue” takes place in the same fictional universe as the “Witches” series.
The TV adaptation of “Witches” premiered this past October and stars “My Week With Marilyn” actress Julia Ormond as Joanna, Jenna Dewan Tatum of “American Horror Story: Asylum” as Freya, and “In Plain Sight” actress Rachel Boston as Ingrid, while Mädchen Amick of “Twin Peaks” portrays Joanna’s sister, Wendy.
The TV show received middling reviews and currently holds a 50 score out of 100 on the review aggregator website Metacritic.
The second season premiered on July 6. In the new episode, Freya and others wondered about the fate of Killian (Daniel DiTomasso), who is a rival with his brother Dash (Eric Winter) for the affections of Freya. When viewers last saw Killian, Dash had knocked him unconscious and sent Killian’s boat, with him in it, out to sea. The episode also included the return of Freya and Ingrid’s brother, Frederick (Christian Cooke), who had previously been living in Asgard, an area from which witches are believed to originate and which is presided over by Joanna and Wendy’s father King Nikolaus.
“Witches” is slated to air 13 episodes for its second season.
