Bill Clinton’s family rushed to his side after the ex-president underwent a surprise heart procedure Thursday in New York.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton left Washington and traveled to New York’s Presbyterian Hospital following a previously scheduled meeting with President Obama. Daughter Chelsea Clinton was with her father by early afternoon, according to CNN.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Clinton had two stents inserted to prop open a clogged artery, said an adviser. The former US chief executive sought aid after he experienced chest pains.

Clinton “is in good spirits and will continue to focus on the work of his foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts,” said adviser Douglas Band.

Clinton has served as something of a role model for demonstrating how middle-aged men can change their lifestyle following decades of unhealthy eating and lack of exercise.

As president, Clinton’s appetite for junk food was legendary. At one point he went jogging outside White House grounds – but to visit a nearby McDonald’s.

In 2004, Clinton underwent quadruple bypass surgery. Following this experience, his diet and exercise habits changed. He slimmed down and appeared more vigorous.

Since leaving office, he has worked busily on projects with his foundation. In recent weeks, he has been in Haiti to help relief efforts.

Stent insertion is a common surgery in the United States. Also, it would not be unusual for a former quadruple bypass patient to receive further assistance five to 10 years following an initial procedure.
