A traffic jam on approach to Domodedovo Airport in Moscow on Dec. 29, 2010, was made worse when the airport halted flights following power failures caused by freezing rain.

Holiday shopping, combined with the snowy Russian winter, led to nearly 2,000 miles of combined traffic on the streets of Moscow on Dec. 29, 2010 – the distance separating Moscow and Barcelona, Spain, reported the Ria Novosti.

After that day, the new mayor of Moscow pledged to solve Moscow's chronic traffic problem, which President Dmitry Medvedev agreed to oversee.
