Gore doesn't want to talk about Cheney -- then talks about Cheney
Appearing on CNN this morning, former Vice President Al Gore said he didn't want to weigh in on former Vice President Cheney's recent remarks, saying that Cheney should speak for himself.
During that same appearance, Gore decided to weigh in on Vice President Cheney's recent remarks and spoke for him.
Sure you're going to ask Gore about Cheney. Cheney's comments are all over the news. Plus you don't want people to fall back asleep.
“You were a big critic of the previous administration, particularly in the run-up to the war and thereafter," CNN host John Roberts said to Gore. "What do you think of Vice President Cheney’s statements that the Obama administration’s policies are leaving this country less safe?”
"You know, you talk about somebody that shouldn’t be talking about making the country less safe, invading a country that did not attack us and posed no serious threat to us at all. You know, he can speak for himself, and I have a feeling that members of his own party wish that he would not do that. But I’ll let that be an argument between him and them," he replied.

Gore also cast a disapproving eye on Cheney's decision to speak out so soon. He said he wasn't publicly critical of the Bush administration until two years had elapsed following his departure from office.
This isn't accurate. Gore waited 18 months before speaking out (which is about 18 months longer than Cheney waited).
VP vs VP
Regardless, Roberts -- perhaps salivating for a Gore versus Cheney caged wrestling match of sorts -- wanted more. And tried to get Gore to bite.
"Are you suggesting that it is unusual for a former vice president ... to come out this early in a new administration and be this critical?" he asked.
Once was enough for Gore. "You know, that’s a judgment call and he’s made his judgment," he said.
"I don’t want to get dragged into an argument with Dick Cheney about what he’s getting into. So I’m just going to let him speak for himself," he added.
Roberts acquiesced.
