Serena's first-round victory took less than an hour versus the Serb teenager. It's been almost two years since Serena's last appearance in Flushing Meadow. Serena injured her foot after winning Wimbledon last year, followed by illness which kept her off the tennis court until June of this year.

Williams will next take on Dutch player Michaella Krajicek, who's ranked 183 in the world, in the tournament's second round.

The one big upset on Tuesday in the ladies draw was the French Open champ Na Li falling to Simona Halep of Romania. The sixth-seeded Chinese star fell, 6-2, 7-5.

Ladies top seed Caroline Wozniacki advanced quickly into the second round, defeating Nuria Llagostera Vives of Spain, 6-3, 6-1.

Also Tuesday, it took three long sets, but men's second seed Rafael Nadal of Spain outlasted Russia's Andrey Golubev.

“I was for sure nervous. That's normal,” Nadal said. “And what happened today, he didn't help because he played very fast all the time. All the shots, he was trying to do a winner in almost every shot."

On Wednesday, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, and Venus Williams all will be in action.
