Memphis, maybe it's time to turn off the tube, get moving

While other metropolitan areas like to be regarded as "on the move," Memphis, Tenn., by contrast, has a more sedentary image. Or, at least it does in the estimation of Forbes magazine, which has ranked 43 major US cities to determine where a sedentary lifestyle is most pervasive. Drawing on statistics kept by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Nielsen Media Research, which tracks viewing patterns, Forbes staffers compiled data on physical inactivity, the body mass of residents, and time spent watching television. In the case of Memphis, limited transit options, unwalkable neighborhoods, and fondness for traditional Southern cuisine such as barbecued pork were cited as contributing factors to its couch-potato tendencies. The magazine's choices for the most sedentary cities:

  • 1. Memphis, Tenn.
  • 2. New Orleans
  • 3. Las Vegas
  • 4. Detroit
  • 5. Birmingham, Ala.
  • 6. Louisville, Ky.
  • 7. San Antonio
  • 8. Jacksonville, Fla.
  • 9. Nashville, Tenn.
  • 10. Miami
