Bow-wow bulletin: Bulldog is back in elite company

The New York-based American Kennel Club (AKC), which maintains the largest purebred canine registry in the world, each year determines the most popular breeds. For the top dog, the news has been predictable: For 17 straight years, the Labrador retriever has led the list. Recently, however, the AKC came out with its latest list based on popularity figures from the 50 largest US cities, and there was a surprise. The bulldog, which last made a Top 10 appearance in 1935, edged out the miniature schnauzer for the 10th and final place. Beagles, by the way, enjoy the longest continuous Top 10 run, which dates to 1915. The most popular breeds, based on the AKC rankings for 2007:

1. Labrador retriever
2. Yorkshire terrier
3. German shepherd
4. Golden retriever
5. Beagle
6. Boxer
7. Dachshund
8. Poodle
9. Shih Tzu
10. Bulldog
