For the first time, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline rose to $4 (to $4.0005 to be exact by Sunday morning), AAA and the Oil Price Information Service reported. Consumers in some parts of the country have already been paying well above that price.

Severe storms crippled central Indiana with as much as 10 inches of rain Saturday and spawned tornadoes in Wisconsin and the Chicago suburbs. Scuba teams performed swift-water rescues 30 miles south of Indianapolis. Indiana officials reported Sunday that one person drowned and another is missing in the floodwaters.

A fire of unknown origin heavily damaged the historic Texas Governor's mansion early Sunday in Austin. The 150-year-old home is being renovated and was empty.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued five of six missing regatta competitors – mostly college students – on Sunday after their boat had capsized 26 hours earlier in a race from Galveston, Texas, to Veracruz, Mexico. The five were flown to Galveston and are listed in stable condition as crews searched for a sixth man.

Veteran sports broadcaster Jim McKay (below), who died in Monkton, Md., Saturday, was the host of ABC's "Wide World of Sports" and a fixture of the network's Olympics coverage. Perhaps his best remembered moment came at the 1972 Munich Olympics when he delivered the news about the deaths of 11 Israeli athletes captured by Palestinian terrorists, simply saying, "They're all gone."

Washington, D.C., police began setting up controversial vehicle checkpoints Saturday in an attempt to monitor a northeast neighborhood where eight people were killed last weekend and 22 have been killed this year.

Yale University announced its largest expansion in nearly 40 years Saturday. Two new residential colleges, expected to open in 2013, will allow the New Haven, Conn., school to raise its enrollment by 15 percent to 6,100.

Comedian Al Franken won the endorsement of Minnesota Democrats Saturday to challenge Sen. Norm Coleman (R) in November. His only competitor, professor Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer, withdrew, saying he wouldn't oppose Franken in September's primary.

Jockey Ken Desormeaux said Big Brown, the colt heavily favored to become racing's first Triple Crown winner in 30 years, was "just out of gas" in explaining his mount's last-place finish at Saturday's Belmont Stakes in New York.
