'Bear' is favorite dog name, but not for poodles

From its annual registration statistics, the American Kennel Club has discovered that the most popular name for male dogs is "Bear." If that seems odd, a club spokesperson notes that physical appearance and personality traditionally are significant factors in the naming of puppies. A name like "Bear" perhaps is a reflection of the popularity of such breeds as Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds. More often, people tend to use human names (such as Buddy or Daisy) or royal titles, such as King or Princess, to establish that a dog is a member of the family or to indicate its special stature. The top male and female names for dogs, according to the AKC:

  • Male
  • 1. Bear
  • 2. Blue
  • 3. Max/Maximus/Maxwell
  • 4. Duke
  • 5. Buddy
  • Female
  • 1. Lady
  • 2. Belle/Bell/Bella
  • 3. Princess
  • 4. Rose
  • 5. Daisy
