Some 30,000 people have been rescued as search operations continue following Japan's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami on March 11. Amazing stories of survival and hope are still emerging. Here are just a few examples:

3. One family's quick getaway

Ayumi Osuga of Sendai heard her husband shout, “Get out of there now!” Ms. Osuga grabbed her three young children, ran to meet her husband, jumped in the car, and they sped from their home to a nearby hilltop. "My family, my children. We are lucky to be alive," she said. "I have come to realize what is important in life."
