3. Bombings of US embassies in Tanzania, Kenya (Aug. 7, 1998)

Simultaneous truck bombings at the US embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Nairobi, Kenya, in 1998 killed more than 200 people, mostly locals.
 
The attacks were linked to Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri, another top Al Qaeda operative, and brought Al Qaeda to the public’s attention for the first time.
