Lack of Afghan warning ires US allies in NATO

Some NATO allies are dissatisfied at the way the United States kept them informed about Soviet moves in Afghanistan, diplomats here report. Taking into account the capability of US surveillance satellites and other intelligence means, these countries maintain that the Western alliance was not warned sufficiently in advance of the impending Soviet incursion.

"Either once again the CIA [Central Intelligence Agency] was not up to the mark or the US did not share the information it had," a West European diplomat said.
