Prime Minister Michael Manley of Jamaica, no friend of the US, is a fond admirer of Cuba. Violence on his Caribbean island now is mounting -- just as Jamaica readies for parliamentary elections.

At least 30 persons have been killed since Manley announced plans for the elections this fall. Some blame Manley supporters for the killings. Few arrests have taken place.

The mood among islanders is angry. Voters appear to be edging toward opposition leader Edward P. G. Seaga's Jamaica Labour Party. Two recent opinion polls indicate the JLP would win easily over Manley's People's National Party if elections were held now.

If Seaga wins, some observers think violence from Cuba supporters could worsen. Seaga would be expected to tilt slightly toward the US.m
