2,500 Assam students arrested in protest

Police arrested more than 2,500 demonstrators Monday at the start of a two-week picketing campaign which virtually paralyzed government offices and banks. Most of Assam's jails were already filled with anti-immigrant activists, who have been protesting for the past 10 months. The activists want to force out the immigrants to make more jobs available for local people and to preserve the Assamese culture.

Meanwhile, India said Monday it is establishing diplomatic relations with the Vietnamese-backed government in Cambodia headed by Heng Samrin.
