School strikes continue in many US communities

After what was to be the second week of school for many, teacher strikes continued to affect some 600,000 students nationwide. Talks here aimed at ending a walkout affecting 220,000 students were still stalemated, and other Pennsylvania districts were also affected by strikes. In San Jose, Calif., picketing became ugly, with confrontations reported between strikers and 1,100 substitutes hired by the district. Strikes also continued in West Chicago; Columbus and other areas in Ohio; and suburbs of Seattle. Tentative settlements have been reached in Rochester, N.Y.; Barrington, Ill.; and several Rhode Island districts.
