Hostages freed by rebels at Salvadoran OAS offices

Members of the Revolutionary Democratic Front who occupied the offices of the Organization of American States since Sept. 18 abandoned the building after releasing 10 hostages.The seizure was organized to press demands for freedom of political prisoners, the lifting of a state of siege imposed last March, and an end to alleged repression by the armed forces. When the government rejected the demands, front leaders said a promised visit by a Washington-based human rights commission to study their charges would satisfy them.

Meanwhile, the body of a leading member of El Salvador's Human Rights Commission was found, four days after she was kidnapped. An estimated 4,000 people have been killed this year in the undeclared war between left-wing guerrillas, security forces, and right-wing extremists.
