Police-and-student clashes spread through Pakistan

Police and student demonstrators calling for the restoration of democracy clashed in Peshawar in a further escalation of antigovernment protests that have hit three of Pakistan's four provinces. The North-West Frontier Province military government announced it was closing indefinitely all universities in Peshawar and three outlying towns.

The demonstration was the third by students in Peshawar in a week and followed earlier clashes in university towns in central Punjab a nd Baluchistan Provinces.
