Worried Polish authorities await the arrival of March 8. That day will be the anniversary of 1968 demonstrations that erupted into street violence when police moved onto a Warsaw university campus to break up a political meeting. Students and workers in five other major cities quickly joined in support.

Students are preparing to mark the anniversary with debates and lectures -- some by well-known dissenting intellectuals.

Polish authorities, under new pressure from the Kremlin, may feel constrained to intervene. No matter what means they employ, however, they could spark a new stud ent challenge.m
