"To display the truth." This is the simple but profound reason given by Polish students for an exhibition of publications that had been banned before the recent political liberalization there. Some of them may still be officially prohibited, according to TV coverage of the event. The news was that now the Poles did not feel they had to check on the status of items before letting the public see them.

Readers living in freedom may find it hard to sense just how much this means in a communist land. It is a sign that Poland has indeed changed -- and a way of ensuring that the change does no t reverse itself.
