Squatters in Cape Town offered jobs elsewhere

In a fresh move to solve the problem of black squatters on the outskirts of Cape Town, South African governments officials visited the Nyanga camp Monday with the offer of jobs elsewhere in the country.

Piet Koornhof, the minister of cooperation and development, said more than 1, 00 jobs had been found for them. The plight of the squatters at Nyanga was widely publicized last week when police demolished their flimsy shacks with bulldozers. Many of the squatters set up dwellings of branches and plastic sheets after arriving from rural areas in search of work. Officials said there was already high unemployment among blacks in the Cape.
