Poland may be getting the support of an ally for its reform movement. The Hungarian trade unions aren't about to approve Solidarity's often provocative bid for more political freedoms. But they are willing to establish contacts with their Polish counterparts on strictly labor matters. This could help encourage a modus vivendi between solidarity and the government that assures the union's independence and enables Poland to put itself together. Hungary, it ought to be noted, is doing pretty well as a free-wheeling Soviet-bloc partner. The Poles might to do well to listen to some friendly advice.
