United Nations, N.Y.
Salim Ahmed Salim of Tanzania appeared to have been eliminated in his bid to become secretary-general of the United Nations as other third-world candidates prepared to present themselves.
Meanwhile, in two more rounds of secret balloting in the Security Council, incumbent Kurt Waldheim was again vetoed by China, diplomats said.
Mr. Salim, whom the United States is said to have vetoed, fell short of the required nine-vote minimum in subsequent ballots, including the two on Wednesdsay.
Supporters of Mr. Salim were expected to switch their backing to some other contender from the third world. Other potential candidates include Javier Perez de Cuellar of Peru and Carlos Ortiz de Rosas of Argentina.
