Philadelphia's loss

''In Philadelphia, nearly everybody reads the Bulletin.'' With this long-repeated slogan, the Philadelphia Bulletin became known to many Americans who never saw Philadelphia, let alone the paper that was part of the city for 134 years. ''The loss of that voice is tragic,'' said Mayor Green last week as the Bulletin reached its final edition, one more newspaper bowing to implacable economics.

An occasion for sadness. An occasion for remembering the press's responsibility to readers as expressed by a Bulletin publisher a century ago: ''When the subscriber hands the newspaper boy a penny there's an implied contract as binding as if it involved $10,000.'' An occasion for saluting all the people of the Bulletin for giving good reading to nearly everybody in Philadelphia for so long.
