Heavy water use creates big hollow beneath Peking

A huge hollow has developed beneath Peking because of heavy use of underground water combined with the worst drought in 32 years, a scientific spokesman said.

The cave, measuring 400 square miles beneath the capital, was created when the water table dropped by two to three yards. Last year rationing was introduced for some heavy industrial water users.
