Bible re-read

It is easy not to believe, to deny it and give reasons, the shoulders in elegant shrug. What remain are the hands palms up, the quizzical gesture which shuts the book with curt finality, putting it away out of living reach. Who turns his back upon it casts a shadow on the human mind. See in my hands that cradle it how the book springs open as if winged, and the words leap out flaming; now are my lips a sea on which move the ship, Earth, and the kingdoms thereof!
