Argentina balks over how POWs are to be returned

Argentina told British leaders Thursday it will not let its defeated Falklands Army of some 9,000 return home through Argentine ports or in British ships, officials said.

The Argentine military junta has still not acknowledged officially that its forces surrendered in the islands Monday, or that hostilities had ceased. Under the Geneva convention, prisoners of war must be repatriated at the end of hostilities. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher told Parliament the junta wanted the thousands of prisoners of war to be sent home via Uruguay.
