Miguel de la Madrid wins Mexican election

Miguel de la Madrid, presidential candidate of Mexico's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), won Sunday's elections by a wide margin, authorities said.

Political analysts attributed the record-breaking voter turnout to a field of seven candidates, five of them representing new parties including the communist Mexican United Socialist Party. Official results will be released after complaints about voting irregularities are investigated, officials said.

A former planning and budget minister, de la Madrid is expected to follow a more conservative financial policy than the current administration of Jose Lopez Portillo, by reducing inflation and budget deficits rather than aiming for rapid growth.
