Simplification, not flax tax, in Senate panel's sights

The Senate Finance Committee, during its first hearing on major tax reform Tuesday, rejected imposing a ''flat tax'' on Americans, but said it would investigate ways to simplify the tax system in the coming months.
Committee chairman Bob Dole (R) of Kansas indicated that a simplified tax code - one that eliminated most deductions and credits but imposed a sharply lower tax rate - would be a high priority of the next Congress.
