Spanish Socialists move quickly to devalue peseta

A surprise move by the new Socialist government to devalue the peseta by 8 percent indicates a realistic attitude to Spain's economic problems, bankers and economists said.

The announcement by Economy, Commerce, and Finance Minister Miguel Boyer, barely 24 hours after he was sworn in by King Juan Carlos, was aimed mainly at curbing speculation against the Spanish currency.
