Japanese officials promise new trade concessions

Japan, under strong American pressure, indicated it will offer new trade concessions to defuse protectionist moves in Congress and clear the way for a visit to the United States by its new prime minister, Yasuhiro Nakasone.

Japanese officials meeting with a US delegation led by Allen Wallis, undersecretary of state for economic affairs, hinted that they will work out a new package of measures to open the Japanese market to American goods by mid-January.
